Zirconium
Zirconium
Zirconium is a silver-gray transition metal, with atomic number of 40, atomic weight of 91.224, melting point of 1852°C, boiling point of 4377°C and density of 6.49g/cm³. Zirconium demonstrates high strength, ductility, malleability, outstanding corrosion and heat resistance behavior. At elevated temperatures, the finely divided metal powder is capable of igniting spontaneously in air. It cannot be dissolved in acids or alkalis. Zirconium is used in oxide or zirconia form. Zirconium oxide has low thermal conductivity and high melting point.
Zirconium could absorb a large sum of Oxygen(O2), nitrogen (N2), hydrogen (H2), so it could be a suitable getter material. Zirconium could also be used in nuclear reactors to provide the cladding, or outer covering, for the cylindrical fuel rods that power a nuclear reaction. Zirconium filament could be the important candidate for flashbulbs. Zirconium tubes are usually used as corrosion-resistant containers and pipes, especially for hydrochloric acid and sulfuric acid.
Zirconium sputtering target is extensively used in thin film deposition, fuel cells, decoration, semiconductors, flat panel display, LED, optical devices, automotive glass and telecommunication industries.
