Titanium and titanium alloy materials

Titanium is a chemical element with an atomic number of 22 that is classified as a transition metal on the periodic table. Titanium alloy is an alloy composed of titanium (Ti) as a base and other elements. In titanium alloys, in addition to titanium itself, other alloying elements such as aluminum (Al), vanadium (V), nickel (Ni), molybdenum (Mo), and iron (Fe) are added. The alloying elements are added to improve the performance of the titanium, such as to improve the strength, hardness and heat resistance, corrosion resistance, etc. This alloy material combines the excellent characteristics of titanium itself and the improvement effect brought by other elements, and plays an important role in many fields such as aerospace, biomedicine, chemical industry, sports and leisure. 

From the perspective of microstructure, the addition of alloying elements can change the crystal structure and phase composition of titanium. Depending on the type and content of alloying elements, titanium alloys can show α phase, β phase or α + β phase structure. National standard GB/T3620.1-2007 titanium and titanium alloy grades and chemical composition of its brands by T and A, B or C (respectively alpha, beta, alpha + beta alloy) and serial number.

Industrial pure titanium is divided into TA1(UNS R50250) according to the impurity content. ASTM Grade1), TA2 (UNSR50400,ASTM Grade2), TA3 (UNSR50550,ASTM Grade3), TA4(UNSR50700,Grade4) and other grades of TA4 also have high titanium content. General titanium (Ti) content is not less than 99.5%, and other industrial pure titanium grades, the main impurity elements include iron (Fe), carbon (C), nitrogen (N), hydrogen (H), oxygen (O) and so on. However, compared with the TA1 – TA3 TA4 relatively high content of impurities.

TA5 is an alpha type titanium alloy. Its main alloying elements are aluminum (Al) and B. TB3: Ti-3Al-10Mo-8V-1Fe alloy is a heat-treatable and stable β-type titanium alloy.  Common TC grade titanium alloys are as follows:
TC1 is an α + β titanium alloy. Mainly containing aluminum 1.0-2.5%, manganese 0.8-2.0%. Tensile strength 588-735MPa, yield strength 460-570MPa. It has a density of about 4.5-4.55 g/cm³ and a small coefficient of thermal expansion. Hot working performance is good, cold working has work hardening phenomenon. Commonly used in aerospace non-critical parts, chemical corrosion resistant parts and sporting goods.

TC2 titanium alloy was mostly titanium, titanium alloy containing aluminum 3.5 5.0% and 0.8 2.0% of manganese. Its tensile strength is 686-833MPa and yield strength is 560-680MPa. The density is about 4.5-4.55g /cm³, and the coefficient of thermal expansion is small. Hot processing needs to control the process, cold processing will harden. In aerospace for bearing parts, chemical for corrosion resistant pipes and containers.
